Why has the special technique been preserved for 400 years in Nagasaki and in the neighboring area of a large pottery production center? The history of Mikawachi Pottery and the characteristics of its techniques are one of the most enjoyable aspects of pottery making.

In the Edo period, it was called "Hirado-yaki" after the name of the clan, but today it is called "Mikawachi-yaki". We will look back on the history of this pottery from its beginnings through the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras to the present day.

Openwork Carving is a technique in which countless holes are made in the shape of a basket, Hand-crafted chrysanthemums is a technique in which petals are cut up one by one, and Eggshell porcelain is a technique in which light is allowed to penetrate through. He has continued to create delicate pottery that dares to challenge the limits of porcelain.

During the Edo period (1603-1867), the Hirado domain was a "purveyor kiln" for the lord of the Hirado domain, producing delicate ceramics that were made without regard to profitability under the benevolent protection of the lord. This exhibition features masterpieces that symbolized the craftsmanship of an era, viewed from special angles photographed by photographer Yasuhiro Okawa.
